Navigating shopping during the holiday season while struggling with impulse control can be a special challenge.
The holiday season is one of gift-giving. But what happens when our brains are wired for impulsivity, and each purchase gives us a lovely dopamine hit? Join Sophie Talmadge Silleck, LMSW in exploring the common pitfalls for impulsive people while shopping for the holidays.
Let’s be honest, who doesn’t love presents? We’ve all heard the joke about going holiday shopping and ending up with only presents for yourself. It’s funny because it’s true, and we all laugh because it’s so relatable.
But what if it goes too far? And what if we actually do have loved ones to buy presents for, and can’t afford to spend it all on ourselves?
Shopping during the holidays doesn’t have to mean an empty bank account come New Years. It is possible to get the presents you need to for loved ones, buy yourself a little something without going overboard, and still come out ready to take on 2026.

Avoid all-or-nothing thinking
Honor your own desires, while also keeping budgets in mind!
It’s so easy when we are already in a spending-mindset to give ourselves a little too much permission to click purchase. Sales are on, your credit card is already out, and you know what you like. Shopping for other people can be hard, and buying something for ourselves is tempting when we’re already filling the online cart. Next thing you know, your credit card bill is way higher than yesterday and you have no idea how it happened.
Remember, it doesn’t have to be all or nothing! You can buy yourself a few fun things as long as you still are within budget and have enough leftover for other financial obligations.
Lean into mindfulness
Staying mindful while shopping during the holiday season is so important. If you see something you really want, put it on the wish list and decide later. You don’t need to be impulsive and buy just because it’s right in front of you. It will most likely be there a few days later if you still want it. There’s also no need to buy a million things for one person… one or two really thoughtful gifts go a really long way! Instead of making decisions you’ll regret, pause, take a deep breath, and ask yourself if you really want to buy it.
Focus on anything other than gifts
Don’t let overspending and materialism be the focus of your holidays!
Time with loved ones is worth so much more than any item. Slow down, be present, and remember that the memories we make are the true gift.
